Waughtown is a great neighborhood in the city of Winston-Salem. It is a vibrant and diverse community with plenty to see and do. This neighborhood also has a rich history as one of the first neighborhoods created when the city was founded. Waughtown Historical District Waughtown was the first place that was settled after the city of Winston-Salem was founded in 1766. The name of this community comes from a story about an early man who lost his way and ended up wandering for hours on end. His family finally spotted him as he came down from Hanes mountain where they had been searching for him. They cried “Where are you?” and he replied “I’m over here.”
Waughtown neighborhood has some unique features including streets lined with beautiful oak trees, houses that have stood since the beginning of Winston-Salem, tall hills that make up one side of the neighborhood, steep slopes and unique sidewalks that are steps or stairs.

Waughtown is located near Wake Forest University on North Main Street, across from the Carver School District Administration building. This location puts you right next door to some great high schools like Mount Tabor, Reynolds, and Carver High Schools (to name a few). You are also just minutes away from Salem College which is located right off of Avenue where there’s also Plenty of Shops, Restaurants, and Bars. The architecture of the homes in Waughtown vary with styles including Victorian, Bungalow, Craftsman, and Cape Cod. The majority of the houses were built in the 1920’s but you can find many newer buildings that have been mixed into this older community.
