North Carolina. West Salem is located in the northwestern part of the city. West Salem is considered and includes the area running from Summit Avenue to the south, between Peters Creek Parkway and Silas Creek Pkwy on both sides of Hanes Mill Rd. (Old Hanes Road), which goes through it around its northern border. The majority of homes are ranch homes on smaller lots but there are also large suburban houses with acreage throughout West Salem as well as commercial areas along Hanes Mill Rd and just slightly outside its borders in places like Oak Hollow Plaza Shopping Center at Old Hanes & Peters Creek Pkwy.
Another attraction to this community is the Oak Hollow Farms subdivision. This is an area of open space and trails where people can walk, jog, or bike for exercise. The trail system starts at the corner of Hanes Mill Rd (Old Hanes Road) & Pleasant Ridge Ave on the West Salem side and goes up Peters Creek to Dellwood Road and Searsmont Drive then down to Silas Creek Parkway.
The main roads through West Salem are Waughtown Street which runs north/south from Ola Mae Street in downtown Winston-Salem to Walkertown Avenue outside the city limits, Waughtown St turns into Old Hanes Rd going South East from Silas Creek Pkwy but technically still called Waughtown in this, then turning back into Old Hanes Rd at Graylyn Crest Dr. just before Central School Rd (which also runs north/south).
The only other main road through West Salem is Peters Creek Pkwy which runs East-West bisecting Waughtown St and Peters Creek Parkway which forms the Western border of this community.
West Salem Community Association, Inc. was formed in 1986 to be the voice for its neighborhood and surrounding areas. The Association works with city officials on issues related to the quality of life in our community. It provides a forum for citizens to discuss these concerns with elected officials and government agencies; it encourages citizen participation by providing educational programs, opportunities for volunteerism, and social activities; it promotes property values among its members; it acts as a liaison between area schools, churches and civic organizations.
The West Salem Community Association is a non-profit organization which has been organized exclusively for charitable, community and educational purposes. The association’s objective is to support the civic interests of citizens in the neighborhoods located between Silas Creek Parkway on the west and Peters Creek Parkway on the east; from Graylyn Crest Drive along Old Hanes Road on the north and Dellwood Road/ Searsmont Drive on the south.
West Salem borders North Carolina’s Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO) to its immediate south. It also borders Interstate 40 two miles southeast of its center. Downtown Winston-Salem is about 5 miles to the East of West Salem’s northern border with Waughtown St.
Additionally, West Salem is bounded on the north by Graylyn Crest Dr., Central School Rd. to the east, Peters Creek Pkwy to the south and Hanes Mill Rd (Old Hanes Road) to the west.
